I'd go in a cafeteria and eat with whoever. Gray didn't mean anything. And I never forgot where I came from.

And actually, when I retired the first time, my message to the troops where I left was, I may be retiring from this position, but I'm always going to have your six. Because the men and women in the Border Patrol, men and women of ICE, what great American patriots they are. So, and I'm back again. And again, don't forget where I come from. I don't let anybody carry my bag.

I show up at airport, everybody wants to be, you know, the director's in, or the border czar's in. Make sure we take care of them. I carry my own bag. I'm happy staying at Hampton Inn. I fly coach. I'm just a small-town kid from Carthage, New York. So never forget where you came from. That's probably the biggest life lesson I've ever learned from my dad.

True story. So a couple of Bronze Stars, Purple Hearts, too. And never knew it. Never knew it until he got really sick. He had to go to assisted living. Found all these medals. He didn't want to talk about them. So I got him put in a shadow box. And when he was doing his will, you know, all these kids, hey, what do you want? What do you want? I just wanted one thing. I wanted the shadow box.
