Because clearly there is a relationship between those two things.
People of one discernible ethnic group will bring with them and will transmit to future generations a certain set of cultural values, religious denominations, outlook, sensibility.
And it's important to note, and it's just again a historical fact, that the institutions of this country, that broadly speaking, the sense of self of this country has been.
Born out of the pretty stable English ethnic majority that has existed for, as you say, constantly a thousand years.
So to completely deny that seems to me to be a denial of just fact aside from anything else.
But also I kind of return to this point, which is that if you want to maintain a notion of national identity, whether we're talking about British or whether we're talking about English, which is not purely ethnically exclusive, which will allow people to buy into being a
Member of this society, however defined, provided that they do subscribe to the culture that they love, the culture they are a part of it.
I do.
They're almost shaped by it, even without realizing it.
This is not about them g being given a PowerPoint presentation or told to go off and read Shakespeare.
It's something that they live and breathe almost without realizing.
Then you need to be concerned about hyperdiversity and you need to be concerned about mass immigration, multiculturalism, and the sort of demographic.
Challenges, I say, which sort of flow from it.
It's almost like to to uh rescue civic nationalism, you need to recognise that um these issues matter, I suppose, is where I'm coming from in this particular question.
And something that gets lost, I think, a lot of the time.
Um and also I think people on the people who are just trying to pretend that these issues aren't really a problem or want to refight the arguments over migration and um racism.
That we might have had in previous generations, you're precisely fueling the more explicitly hardline racist tendencies that you claim you want to combat.
You are surrendering the territory to them.
You're giving them a script.
And I just wish more and more people would recognize that.
