You're doing something, like you said, you could be happy in the moment and spend that money.
And it can have a very practical outcome too, because you find people who might be anxious and depressed, they don't stick to their plans.
They don't have that ability to follow things through.
I always think of the example in Benjamin Graham's book, Intelligent Investor, of Mr. Market.
And if you were to diagnose him, he'd be like...
bipolar or medically depressive.
He swings going through euphoria.
And a lot of investors, even without that extra layer, they do the same thing.
They get scared when markets drop and they get out at the bottom of the market.
And then the market goes back up and they buy in at the top.
That's a good allegory, I guess.
Absolutely.
And it comes back down to that smart goal setting where the S is for specific.
So even putting down amounts, how much am I going to start with?
How much am I going to save this year?
Being very specific.
And when you do tick those off, the feeling is fantastic.
That reward of not only financially, but you get that boost in yourself and it helps improve your confidence and flows into other areas of your life as well.
Yeah, there's so many and I've already mentioned one, which is The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham.
Warren Buffett was heavily inspired by that and I like it personally because it talks about the approach to value investing, but then it uses a number of examples that are quite enjoyable, like Mr. Market, a character that you can actually visualize in your head about how the everyday investor approaches markets.
