Great to be with you.
Thanks for having me.
Well, Governor, I think what we're seeing in so many places in so many ways is the bottom dropping out in support for the United States, in seeing the United States as a credible leader that other countries want to work with and follow.
And you don't have to take my word for it.
We see it in poll after poll, in country after country, polls showing that China is considered more reliable, more trustworthy.
that the United States is considered an adversary by countries like Germany.
70% of people in one recent poll in Germany said the United States is an adversary.
We're seeing similar numbers in other countries across Europe, Korea, Japan, and other places.
That's not just bad in and of itself.
It's bad because it makes it so much harder for us to do the things we need to do to deliver for the American people, because it's harder to bring all these other countries along to deal with problems that as strong and powerful as we are, we simply can't effectively deal with on our own.
You know, I think Americans feel this instinctively.
They know it.
We're much better off having friends in the world than not.
And one of the things that has set us apart for decades were these alliances, voluntary in nature, not something that we did under the barrel of a gun.
or some kind of economic coercion, but because there were so many like-minded countries that whatever our small differences might be, were fundamentally aligned with us in trying to achieve the same goals.
And that meant that not just the weight of the United States, but their weight, too, could go toward achieving those goals.
Let me give you one concrete example because it's, I think, important for all of us.
One of the most complex and arguably most important relationships we have is the one with China.
And I don't want to reduce it to a bumper sticker.
It's competitive.
