Appearances
There are aspects of contestation.
There are aspects of cooperation.
And we want to avoid conflict.
But if we're playing one-on-one against China, there's a mismatch there.
They're a lot bigger than we are.
Their market's a lot bigger.
Their manufacturing's three times ours.
They've got more ships.
They put forward more papers and more patents.
And as strong and as powerful as we are, you know, playing one-on-one can be tough.
if we're aligned with other countries that have similar problems with some of China's actions, whether it's Europe, whether it's Japan, Korea, India, Canada, Australia, suddenly we go from dealing with China representing about a quarter of the world's economy to dealing with China representing 50 or 60% of the world's economy.
And that's a much heavier weight for China to ignore.
So it just shows that when we're trying to get things done, we're so much better off
when we're aligned with other countries.
Well, let's go back to the secret sauce of NATO.
Why is it so important?
I think it's a story we haven't told very well.
Back after the Second World War, when we were doing everything possible to make sure there wasn't a Third World War, one of the things that came out of that was the NATO alliance, a defensive alliance.
And what was so brilliant about it was this one piece called Article 5.
And Article 5 said, an attack on one is an attack on all.
