What did that mean?
It meant that any would-be aggressor against any one NATO country had to think to themselves, if I attack this country, I've got to deal with all of those countries.
And that proved to be the best deterrent, the best way to prevent war.
People don't want to be, Americans don't want to be in more wars.
They're 100% right.
Defensive alliances, where everyone has each other's back, is the best way to make sure we don't get into a war in the first place.
There's a very good reason that Russia has not attacked a NATO country.
It's because it knows that it's going to have to take on all of them.
Now, the United States is in many ways
take us out of that picture, NATO becomes maybe less of a concern as a deterrent.
So that's why it's so important we remain engaged.
But remember, too, when we were attacked on 9-11, the first and only time Article 5 has been invoked was after 9-11 when all of our European partners came to our defense.
And they jumped in and were with us in Afghanistan for year after year after year, proportionately taking greater losses than we did.
So I hope that we can remember why this alliance was such a brilliant institution in the first place and why it's exactly the thing to do to make sure we're not in more wars.
Well, I wouldn't disagree with you.
And I think the fact that there were not clear, achievable objectives that were set out clearly for the American people, as well as for Congress beforehand, never mind our allies and partners around the world, who we then said, we need you in this after we didn't tell them what it was about and engaged in something that had severe repercussions for them.
um and then to get into something where as always our military does the job we ask it to do but it's that job uh not having thought it through uh not having set out clear achievable objectives uh that leads to this great mismatch where you might have tactical successes in taking out you know some iranian missiles somewhere or as you pointed out re-obliterating parts of its nuclear program but uh losing the war uh strategically
And now we're in a situation where the president seems to be in a corner that he can't get out of.
Some have called it an escalation trap.
I thought initially that he would be really hemmed in by two things.
