And it's now generally regarded as one of the earliest fully developed mummy curse tales in English. podcast-host

You know, we've been having a run of mummy. podcast-host

stories and the point being made was the early ones which came out sort of at the beginning of the nineteenth century. podcast-host

So what happened was Napoleon went into Egypt, opened it up, went with illustrators, uh started bringing back pictures podcast-host

created a great wave of uh Egyptomania in the West and uh then they started writing stories about mummies. podcast-host

Originally they were kind of romantic stories, a lot of the early stories going on into the nineteenth century about some kind of romantic love interests. podcast-host

You find this of course, because Dracula was reworked like that as well, wasn't it? podcast-host

About a a historical love interest, but uh and he's not a mummy. podcast-host

But but you know what I mean? podcast-host

This was the theme of them and podcast-host

Reincarnation was a big theme and the mystery of Egypt. podcast-host

And that went on, even if you read something like uh Algernon Blackwood's The Descent into Egypt, it's a very mystical story about the power of the past to possess. podcast-host

And in Blackwood, of course, Blackwood's very interested in how the world can um basically gobble up the soul of um I'm simplifying a little bit, but it the the man on the trees loved to podcast-host

same thing uh about the the the the great powers of the natural world which are superhuman or they're not necessarily personified or if they are they're in a strange way they're almost archetypal aren't they how they uh gobble up or they um attenuate and dilute and eat eat the souls of the people so there's a big th theme of that in Egyptology in Egypt stories podcast-host

But then in the middle of the 19th century, this idea of the mummy's curse starts coming out. podcast-host

This isn't completely podcast-host

from nowhere because um, you know, the the the Rosetta Stone was deciphered and we were able to read hieroglyphs not me actually, but we were able to read the hieroglyphs, um and, you know, they often said, Anybody stealing my stuff is gonna be cursed. podcast-host

So th this so the curse then gets uh k kind of kind of uh imported into popular literature. podcast-host
