But they said that she was beautiful as a mermaid, and her photograph was always on the piano at home.

So I started with the story of Rosa,

I worked in a school two shifts, 12 hours a day, so I would have the story evolving in my head all day.

I would come home, have a shower to get rid of the school, and after dinner, lock myself in the kitchen.

And while the family was watching TV, I was pouring out these anecdotes, really, these people that to me were not even connected.

It was like one thing after the other, without a plan, without an idea of what I was doing or where I was going.

And then somehow the story became also the story of the country.

And so naturally these pages ended in the military coup, which was the moment when my life really changed.

The feeling was of joy, of freedom, of excitement.

This creative force that took over me completely.

My mother said at some point, I think this is a novel and why don't we just take a chance?

Let's send it to some publishers.

She sent the book.

We never got an answer.

I never got a rejection letter, just silence.

Until one day, a secretary called me, and she said, I took your manuscript home, and I really like it, but no one here is going to read it.

You need an agent.

I didn't know that agents existed for literature.

I thought they were just for football or something.

And so she gave me a name.
