And so I actually had a very interesting chat with the sheriff today.

And the sheriff department opinion is,

actually generally I spoke with one but this person said that this is the opinion of many people that he works with is that they fully understand why the concrete barrier bike lanes are desirable but they actually do slow down emergency response times because

vehicles cannot pull over to let the police the fire engine get through and actually during peak hours the emergency vehicles entirely avoid the roads with separated bike lanes and they are forced to go into the neighborhoods and take alternate routes instead so now you've got you know sirens going through your neighborhoods

And so we absolutely want to make things safer for the bikes.

But the general opinion of, I haven't talked to the fire department yet.

I have reached out to them.

But the general opinion of the sheriff, at least, is that we do need to be very thoughtful about where the concrete separated barriers go.

They cannot go everywhere.

Now, the buffered bike lanes where you just have a painted buffer or anything where there's just paint and cars can continue to pull over, completely fine.

But there is, objectively speaking, a tradeoff with longer emergency response times that happen when we add concrete barriers to the city.

And so, you know, with the eight that were proposed in this plan here, I would ask that we be...

very strategic in how we think about where we are blocking off roads.

And I think it becomes a much bigger problem with the small roads where it's two lanes.

And one thing that the sheriff mentioned actually was a lot of times on the smaller roads with a concrete bike lane, they don't even want to turn the siren on because they are going to massively confuse everybody in that road because nobody has anywhere to go.

And so

Again, I think with the two-lane roads, that is where we want to be particularly thoughtful about concrete bike lanes.

So that would be my ask.

I also did want to comment on the definition of project success.

So we say a successful project will be one in which more people use the facility.
