the period of like expansion into the new world.
So that's like kind of, cause the, the first era of, um, the golden age of piracy, it's like split into three eras.
And the first era was from 1650 into like the, the early 1700s.
And it was called the buccaneering era.
Ooh.
And so Spain was very – they were early arrivers to the New World.
They were in on it early.
The market was bullish on the New World and colonization.
And the other European nations were like, we want to get in on that, but a navy is very expensive and also expensive.
the golden age of piracy overlapped with what was called the age of sail.
Um, and so the age of sail is basically when like masted ships became the primary method of travel and commerce and also like warfare.
So all of these nations were like working on their navies very heavily.
Um, but I mean, still in the buccaneer era.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The buccaneering area.
So there were what were called privateers.
Um, and basically, I mean, the journey across the Atlantic ocean was really long and it was very hard to like
coordinate a navy and very expensive and so these nations what they took to doing instead was giving pirates what was called a letter of mark and essentially it would be like the king of england would be like hey here's a letter of mark you're you're we're gonna allow you to do piracy we won't hunt your ships you can dock in our ports as long as you only attack ships from other nations so don't attack any english ships oh
Go have your way with Spanish, like whoever.
