When Lee is captured, he has about 9,000 Confederate soldiers there.

And yet within a week or two weeks are 28,000 parole passes issued because so many had deserted.

So they come back and then they start to go home.

And how do they get home?

They walk.

So prisoners of war in the North, remember there are thousands, tens of thousands of prisoners of war in the North.

They have to take an oath of allegiance.

So that's the one thing that occurs.

Everybody has to take an oath.

And I think it's fascinating to know

That the oath that everyone in the federal government, including all military, take is an oath that we still take today that was written in 1862 to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

So they have to do that.

And then they have to sign sort of if they want to participate more, they have to sign an amnesty agreement.

a request for amnesty, which says they accept the results of the war, including the end of slavery.

There are political restrictions on some, not most, but some, but most everybody can vote.

And there are very, very few prosecutions.

So most of them just return home.

But again, what do they return home to?

The loss of enslaved people, the devastation of the economy, and so many orphans because there's so many soldiers that have been killed.

Right.
