And it creates a problem that we still have to this day, which is a myth that white people should be in power at the expense of black people.

That's right.

And that allows this this terror campaign to happen.

Remember that in this period, Mississippi and South Carolina are majority black people.

And they're very honest about this to say, listen, we can't have democracy because if there's democracy, black people will have political power.

will be in politics.

And in fact, during Reconstruction, that's 1865 to 1877, 2,000 Black men hold elective office, including a Black U.S.

senator from Mississippi and many Black congressmen.

It's when public education starts.

This is a chance at biracial democracy, which dies starting in 1877 and by 1905 with these new Southern state constitutions.

We have a racial police state.

And that was the Virginia of my birth was a racial police state.

Yeah, it's a good question because my textbooks when I was a kid in Virginia said that slavery was not that bad.

Segregation was really good.

And so when I started to understand this, particularly when I was at West Point,

First, it was like, oh, my God, I was lied to.

Then it was, oh, my gosh, I participated in this lie.

And then after that, it was, hey, I am free to tell this story.

I'm liberated to tell the truth.

And so that's kind of what I feel now.
