But they really thought that.

And because there had been historical precedent for this.

If you think about the English Civil War, that's where Cromwell and others did hang or were disemboweled.

They were completely disemboweled.

treated as traitors.

And that's what they were called during this war, is traitors.

Remember, there's only one crime in the U.S.

Constitution, and that's levying war against the United States as treason.

So there was every reason to believe that there would be a harsh peace after this, where at least the leaders would be

brought to trial for this.

And remember, there's only one leader who is executed during this war, and that's a guy named Wirtz who was commanding the prison in Georgia that was responsible for so many U.S.

Army casualties.

But he's the only guy that hangs for this war, which is really incredible.

Yeah, he is running.

And, you know, Lincoln says, let him run.

But he's captured in May of 1865.

And famously, he is wearing his wife Verena's cloak over his uniform.

And so that becomes propaganda that he's actually dressed in women's clothes trying to get away.

Not quite true, but that is the sort of propaganda that comes out.

And he is put and jailed in Fortress Monroe.
