What would have happened?
We don't know.
The problem with the way they did it is, is that they came back into the government immediately without accepting the results of this.
And the main thing that they didn't accept is,
was the fact that black men through the 13th Amendment, which ended slavery, and then we can talk about the other, the Reconstruction Amendments as well, they did not accept a black equality.
And because they wouldn't accept that, then they are going to fight against it really until the 1960s.
And even after that, they're going to fight against it.
So that they did not accept the results of this, of the win.
Remember, and it wasn't just a little bit of a win.
This is a complete demolition
of the Confederate government, which, by the way, was never recognized by anybody outside the United States.
It is an insurrectionist force that fought and lost the rebellion completely.
So he is, after the war, he is given parole at Appomattox.
And this is what Grant does.
And it probably goes a little bit further than what Lincoln would have wanted.
But he basically says, you go home and nothing will befell you.
He is indicted for treason, but he has never tried, never comes up for trial because of that.
And then he says right immediately, two weeks after the war, he says, listen, if you give black men equality, this thing may not be over yet.
And in 18, a little bit later, he testifies before Congress during Reconstruction.
And he says, listen, if you give black men equality, then this thing may start again.
