In fact, what he really says is that if it was up to him, he would kick every black person out of the state of Virginia.
This is after the war.
And he does another thing called the White Springs Manifesto, where he says no black person should have any political rights whatsoever.
So he continues this.
He never apologized for secession, becomes president of Washington College.
That's my alma mater, which becomes Washington and Lee University and opposes black equality really to the end of his days.
And he dies in 1870 and then becomes sort of the Christlike figure of the defeated South.

Well, the quartermaster general, a guy named Montgomery Miggs, his son dies.
And there are so many people dying in 1864 during the Overland Campaign led by Grant that there's nowhere to bury all these remains.
So he says, I know what, let's put them right in Robert E. Lee's front yard.
And so they have seized this property because you have to seize it.
They seize it within six hours of Virginia seceding.
Because if you don't control Arlington, you have to evacuate Washington.
So if you've ever been up there, it commands the Washington, D.C.
from Arlington.
Remember, Arlington used to be part of the District of Columbia.
So it retrocedes back to Virginia in 1847 to protect the slave trade.
So it is captured by the United States and they start interring American soldiers to include black,
soldiers there.
