getting like barley and potatoes, and then all of a sudden you get this incredibly strong spirit, to them was like, this is magic.
So we must be stealing this from the other world.

So puchín makers started to believe that by distilling this spirit, that they're stealing this from the fairy world, from the other world.
And infant mortality was really, really high in Ireland.
So people were afraid of their kids becoming what's called changelings.

They would just say, that's not my baby, that's a changeling.
My real baby, the fairies took him and they're away with the fairies.

My real brother and sister is in the woods away with the fairies and what they've left in their place is a changeling.
So poutine makers were terrified that their kids were going to be targeted by the fairies, by the other world.
Absolutely, because they're stealing this spirit.
And that's why, like, when a poutine maker is making poutine, the first thing they do is the poutine that comes out, they throw it over their shoulder for the fairies.
But also that's the bit that will blind you.
