You know, so it's the way of it.
The science of it is like, don't drink the first bit of poutine because it contains a different type of alcohol that will leave you blind.
So they give that one to the fairies.
But anyway, poutine makers used to dress their kids in the opposite gender's clothes.
So if they had a little boy, they'd dress the boy as a girl.
If they had a little girl, they'd dress him as a boy.
And this used to happen up until the 1930s.
And it was their way of confusing the fairies to stop them turning into changelings.
And you can still see...
We have a wonderful resource in Ireland called Ducas, which is our national folklore collection.
And there's photographs of little lads on the beach in the 1930s wearing full dresses, you know.
And this was a normal part of culture that the gender could be fluid like that.
