Good evening, Mayor and Ma members of City Council.
My name is Jemaia Pittman.
I am a Salute U student and a young person connected to the Charlotte community.
I do not believe in earlier curfews the best solution young people gather together does not audio mean we are causing trouble.
Sometimes we are simply spending time together at the school, work or an event.
A curfew could also affect jobs, transportation, family responsibilities, school activities, and social lives.
Young people who are not causing trouble should not be punished for the actions of someone else.
Instead of focusing mainly on enforcement, I am asking the city to invest safe places for us to go, reliable transportation, mentors, positive activities, and the trusted adults who can help conflict when this begins.
Having someone who will listen in co who will listen in a calm situation could stop a problem before it becomes worse.
Before making a decision, please listen directly to young people who will be affected.
If the curfew is changed, may make it temporarily and publicly review whether it actually makes Charlotte safer and whether it's being applied fairly.
Young people are a part of this community to our experience, opinions, and should be included in decisions about our safety and freedom.
