Were you a drinker or did you seek solace in other things?
So how do you find the resilience to keep coming back to work in that environment?
Do you have to let yourself grieve rather than try and medicate yourself with whatever's lying around?
Today I'm with former police officer and hostage negotiator Vince Hurley.
How did you move from there into hostage negotiation?
It's that popular?
You mentioned your mum was a particularly compassionate person.
Does she have a role in your life?
being able to undertake this kind of work in your mind and the example she set?
And how do you think that plays into the necessary work of hostage negotiation, that example?
You mentioned there's someone who's potentially suicidal, who's on the threshold of suicide.
That'd be one of the kind of incidents you'd be brought in to deal with.
What other kind of situations would someone like you be brought in to deal with?
And when you say he was fine, do you mean he surrendered to police?
What about attending someone who is on the ledge, so to speak, about to take some awful step to end their own lives?
The previous case you mentioned, you tried to get the man in question to talk about what was bothering him.
Would you ask that of someone on the point of taking their own life?
So does this mean you stand right back and you don't use coercive language?
