What about attending someone who is on the ledge, so to speak, about to take some awful step to end their own lives?
The previous case you mentioned, you tried to get the man in question to talk about what was bothering him.
Would you ask that of someone on the point of taking their own life?
So does this mean you stand right back and you don't use coercive language?
So when you say it is a good idea to ask that person what's bothering them,
then that, I suppose, implies that whatever crisis is going through that person's head, it doesn't get redoubled by talking about it.
It gets alleviated.

Did you then put that argument to her, life was worthwhile, or were you just standing and waiting for her to say something to you?
It sounds like she's told you about her family back in Germany.

And do you get a sense that...
whatever the kind of thing that had been expanding within her was now starting to relax and contract?
And when you reminded her she had family back home, who, of course, would have been devastated...
