Your career is not really a purpose because obviously you directly benefit from it.
It's it's something that plays out over the course of your life.
For some people a purpose could be spiritual.
It doesn't happen to be for my personal sense of purpose and nor does it have to be in the research literature.
The classic line here is the world gets better when old men plant trees.
They're never gonna rest under its shade.
And the interesting paradox is, even though they did this thing.
That gained them personally nothing.
And yes, maybe some generations later.
The kids of that village will have a tree to rest under.
The interesting and almost paradoxical finding is that these people have better lives.
They live longer, they have lower all cause mortality, lower insulin sensitivity, lower
central body mass, they have uh bigger friendship networks, they go further in their academics, they have higher lifetime wealth accumulation and higher average incomes.
So think about anything you'd want to be true about you when you're sixty five.
People that score significantly higher in purpose.
All of these things improve.
And there's a great paper in a very related concept of life meaningfulness.

So you look at these things and the more purpose goes up,
The better people's lives.
