And these machines are making incredibly intrusive decisions into our lives, sometimes with our knowing by our interactions with them.
But also because of systems I have built in my career.
They are deciding diagnostics.
You know, you go for a second opinion with the doctor.
If they're using the same model, are you actually getting a second opinion?
They are deciding who gets jobs.
Who gets university admissions?
Who gets extra attention from the police?
Or Border Patrol?
Again.
You don't have to assume that the models are flawed or that the people are villains.
To appreciate that what is in my self interest is
May not always be
in the interest or in the cost functions instantiated in these models.
And that is a serious problem I mean, a deep and fundamental flaw.
So the really for me are two responses.
One is what to do about that almost legal question, if you will.
And then the other.
