What is sufficient amount of power?
So it's interesting to think how how Machiavellian thinking was actually feeding some other political theories about power and political practices.
Okay, I promised you to talk about
Talk about one of the classics of European political philosophy, and this is Montesquieu.
And uh I think the the paradox of Montesquieu is that you cannot really classify him.
Is he a liberal or is he a conservative?
He's certainly not to the left, but he is very sympathetic to the idea of the Republic.
But he's okay also with the idea of the constitutional monarchy.
He's not okay with the idea of
Despotism, which for him is a rule by one without laws.
I remind you that for Mont Montesquieu, the key difference is between republic, the rule of many, but uh limited by law, uh the monarchy, the rule of one limited by law, and the uh despotism, the rule of one not limited by law.
And uh Montesquieu has many other classes
Political thinkers are thinking about the about, I mean, they had a very deep historical material.
They had a big big advantage over us.
They were studying a lot of ancient history.
And while studying a lot of ancient history, the Greeks and the Romans, many of these people, including Machiavelli himself, by the way, were
understanding why at a certain point republics although they might seem to be the best pol possible uh the the best possible political systems while republics fail while they go to the to the decline why do why they decline and the answer many of them from Polybius to Montesquieu was saying that well guys it was enough of
