It was actually the anarchists who came up with the term terrorism to describe what they were doing.
They didn't take it as an insult.
They actually said, no, no, this isn't just criminality.
This is we're not just doing violence.
This is terrorism.
And and they described it as propaganda by deed.
In doing that, they wanted to claim something that was more noble than mere criminality.
Um well it's here it gets complicated because it depends a little bit on what what definition of terrorism you want to adopt.
So if you're talking about the legal definition of terrorism under Australian law.
then that'll all be determined in court.
It's entirely possible under that definition to have committed a terrorist offense even when you don't have any violence against people.
So violence against property is sufficient for that.
Think for example of a group that blows up an abortion clinic when no one's in it.
Most scholars of terrorism would say, well, that's still terrorism, even though you're not
uh enacting violence against people because what you're actually doing is, and this is another element of the definition of terrorism, it's it's political in nature for the sake of sending a message.
So when you put all those sort of factors together, the facts as we have them, it wouldn't be at all a controversial statement to say, yeah, this is an act of terrorism.
It's not the highest level act of terrorism, but very arguably you could fit it within that definition, yeah.
Are we seeing that and does this support that warning?
Well it seems to at this point, again we'll see how it plays out in court.
