And every team had one stopper.
The sweeper would be, it was kind of like a modern invention.
He was the player who would bring the ball out.
You could have two stoppers in many of these two-man central defences, but you wouldn't often, well, you wouldn't get two sweepers, which was what made this so revolutionary.
And you mentioned Brian bringing the ball out from the back.
It actually plays a part.
We'll come into later in the season, one of the most famous goals scored under the Doherty hero.
So yeah, United started the season really well.
They won five of the first six games.
They did play with ambition.
They played exactly the same kind of imposing style they'd played in the second division.
They just carried on playing the same way and they didn't show any signs of fatigue from going down under.
Occasionally, though, the naivety of that attacking play did cost them in the early parts of the season as they started coming up against top-quality opposition.
People were surprised when their first defeat was at QPR, but really looking at what QPR were doing with this great side, it wasn't so much of a surprise really in retrospect.
Yeah, they also lost Derby, who were a great side, West Ham, who were challenging for European honours at this time, Liverpool and Arsenal.
So these were their defeats in the early season, but it just shows, first of all, that United were a very young side now, thanks to the turnover of all the players.
