So when you watch like a shadow puppet show or whatever, you're very much invited into that narrative.

And you're also invited to project your own understandings and experiences onto those figures.

And so that's kind of like,

i guess what i was aiming for and why i didn't like i guess this this book came went through like so many different iterations but when it came down to sorry i just want to mention joanna who sorry joanna hi um joanna signed the book to um scribner and like totally

completely gave me license to do what I wanted.

Like it was like, you know, like sometimes you sign to a publisher and then they're like, great, so now we can shape it in this way, or I'd like you to kind of do this.

And Joanna was like, you let me know what you want to do and how I can help.

And the sort of faith that she had and then the confidence that that provided for me to kind of do this or experiment in this way was sort of like where I landed with this kind of shadow puppetry thing was probably because of her in some way.

So thanks for that.

Joanna is like this super talented editor that just keeps like

getting just moving up in her career ladder so like so she's not even my editor now she's got like a a new role that's like it was like this big and now it's like that big um so yeah I think like I wanted to keep it in some ways like almost two-dimensionalized

So I guess like one of the questions is like, there were two kind of things that I was thinking of with this.

And the first one was, so you were talking really about the kind of device of the narrator.

And I was thinking like, so I read this short story by Franz Kafka.

It's not like one of his most popular ones.

I think it was even published like posthumously.

It's called The Burrow.

Does anyone know that one?

basically it's narrated by this creature it's like a mole or a vole or something like that and he's talking like he goes at lengths to like talk tell the reader like so i've got this home this hole in the ground right and i've sort of like this is all of the strategies that i've used and the ways that i've created um a home for myself which is
