And so it makes it incredibly hard for
GPs who are already massively demoralised, massively overburdened, facing lots of different decisions to make each day to try and then factor in, right, how am I going to retire?
What does my exit strategy look like?
So it's just really tough.
Not necessarily because the driving factor around retirement we tend to find at the moment is people are just fed up.
They just want out.
But what they're doing is then potentially making that decision without knowing if they've got enough or without knowing...
what retirement they're going to be able to have.
And so it's really, really adding to that burden of pressure and uncertainty around the point of retirement.
And it's unnecessary because it's fair to be able to expect that if you decide you want to take your pension benefits that you'll know what they are
And because of McLeod and because of the time lag on the admin around it, there's a very, very few people who do actually know what their finalised benefits are going to be.
So we tend to find that people are making the decision to retire and they're making those decisions on benefits that are not finalised and they don't really know what the finalised benefits are going to be.
And they just look at, well, this is what I'm going to get.
Then the admin burden comes in again.
And we do tend to find that our GPs who are asking for retirement benefits, they perhaps will get their tax-free cash, their pension commencement lump sum, and they then maybe will not get any pension income for two, three, four months because nothing's calculated and nothing's completed from the admin centre.
So it makes it really quite difficult initially when you retire.
It's difficult everywhere.
GPs are always complicated as far as a pension is concerned.
And so for GPs, the practitioner's scheme has always been a career average earning scheme.
And what that means is that the pension, regardless of what scheme you're in, the pension that you get out at the end of the day is driven by your pensionable earnings.
