And of course, a lot of GPs are GP partners and the pensionable earnings aren't calculated.
There's about an 18 month time lag on what your pensionable earnings look like because accounts have to be finalised and net profit has to be calculated by accountants.
And so it's really, really difficult.
It's always been difficult.
It's not just a case of, well, your earnings were X and you've been in the scheme for...
20 years and so you're going to get Y?
No, no, no, no, not for GPs.
And the added complication for that is that every single GP in the UK, when they joined the pension scheme, they did a little bit of initial officer service before they specialised down into general practice.
Most GPs have some officer service.
This may relate to earlier career hospital work.
It may relate to service running alongside their current GP role or a return to hospital work later in their career.
However, pension statements don't always make this easy to identify or understand.
So it makes it just much more complicated.
It's almost impossible to calculate a GP's pension by doing kind of manual calculations on the back of a piece of paper, whereas you could possibly do that for other medical professions in the UK.
So eternally complex and virtually impossible for, I think, GPs out there to be able to project forward and work out
what they're going to get without help.
There's lots of risks around that because you don't actually know if you're going to have enough money.
And remember, at the point of retirement, from all the NHS pension schemes, you have to make a decision on how much tax-free cash you're going to take.
The 1995 scheme is the only one that gives you an automatic lump sum.
