then it's definitely worthwhile asking for your service extract.

But there is no rush to doing that unless or until you're at the point where you're making active plans for your retirement.

So within the last kind of three to five years of when you intend to work.

It is.

And you know, at the end of the day, it is a really good pension and it is a gold standard pension.

And anybody in the private sector would give their right arm to have something like the NHS pension there to support them in retirement.

However, you can't get away from the fact that there's two key issues here.

You can't get away from the fact that even with the best will in the world, when you go from working to retired, you are taking a considerable drop in income.

at the same time as having a considerable uplift in your free or leisure time which as we know costs money so that's a problem and the other problem is of course your pension gap and that as time goes on as our younger doctors move through their career that pension gap is going to be such a big thing for everybody because I don't know anybody that wants to work until they're 68

Yes, your pension will kick in then, but if you want to access that 10 years earlier, you are giving up 5% for each year that you want to access it earlier.

There's an actuarial reduction and that adds up to a significant amount of money if you just think, right, I'm going to rely on the NHS pension full stop, but I am going to retire at 60.

You will have problems having enough money to live on.
