Something new could be dangerous.

So first time I see somebody new, first time I I met you in the green room uh you know it you were in awe?

I was in awe, yeah.

forget that.

That's

But but um our brain is focused on those first moments in case they're dangerous.

So they get extra like a boost of that is why we remember it.

And and if it has something

Awe inspiring like Northern Lights or a a rocket launch.

That is where your amygdala kicks in because those those meaningful emotional i it it makes you emotional, you know, watch watching the rocket launch.

And so that emotion we also remember the happiest and the saddest moments in our life.

That is the amygdala boost to our memory.

Yes, emotion.

It's been mostly associated with the emotion of fear, but more recent studies have um linked it to a wider range of emotions.

Um my colleague at NYU, Joe Ledoux, uh really put fear on the map for the amygdala that this is everybody has experienced what um neuroscientists call fear conditioning.

So fear conditioning is my my example.

I always use is um I lived in Washington DC when I worked at NIH and um I came home on a Sunday afternoon and turned the corner and my door was the only one at the end of the corner.
