And it could be that he left this world on purpose.

And it has all the signs of someone who decided to just go out into the wilderness and kill themselves.
And in that area where he is, it's quite flat around his home, but there are mountains nearby and crevices and things in those mountains, which he probably would have known about because he hiked in them all the time.
You could easily just never be found if you wanted to.
If you shot yourself and fell into one of these crevices, you might not be found for 20, 50 years or never.
Why he would do that to his wife, though, I don't know.
Because it's a cruel thing to disappear and leave a person not knowing what happened.
