Not threatening, more like... Acknowledgement.
I didn't want to admit it aloud, but I felt it.
A presence...
Older than the town.
Older than the forest.
Watching.
Patient.
And entirely real.
And a small part of the dread I'd been holding onto so tightly eased.
Whatever lived here wasn't interested in harming us, but it was aware of us.
Later, while we sat down at the kitchen table for lunch, I wrote up our experience in my journal and made a note to find out if there were any folk tales written about this watcher or anything resembling the presence we felt.
Maybe I'd ask Dr Christensen.
Alma had kindly made us some sandwiches before leaving for work and we ate them while soaking in the views of the lake and the surrounding forests.
Well, we can check anyway.
The lake was massive and freezing, so I wasn't a huge fan of the idea, the afternoon sun already on its way down.
I also got the sense from Jez that, although he wasn't saying anything, he wasn't the most comfortable with the idea, and I didn't want him to feel pressured.
We walked down to the jetty.
Moored to it was a modest sailing boat and two small rowboats.
They seemed out of place on such a large lake.
