Sure enough, a little further down the beach, we saw the guy Harriet mentioned.
He was dressed like a fisherman or woodsman.
A rough, sturdy old oversized coat, thick woolen trousers tucked into his work boots, and a flat cap.
There was something slightly...
off about his attire, although I couldn't quite place it.
He was steadily digging a hole in the beach, with a shovel that looked far too rusty for the job.
Harriet approached him confidently.
He didn't respond at first, so Harriet bent down to get into his eyeline.
He looked up suddenly, put down his shovel and smiled broadly.
The man looked a little lost at this, so Harriet tried again.
His eyes brightened with recognition and he nodded.
The man frowned a little.
The man then looked behind him and then back at us, glancing up as if he was considering something.
The man seemed suddenly distracted, whipping his head round, as if looking for something on the ground.
He then started patting his pockets down and looking increasingly anxious.
He didn't seem to hear her.
He just picked up his shovel again and resumed digging.
We headed for the jetty and left him to his digging.
Sunlight shimmered off the wood and snow as we walked over to the jetty.
