What's in development?
Is it biologically possible to have a male pill?
I think there's a lot of confusion about this.
It's a very important topic for lots of people, which is why it's great to do it on What's Up Docs.
Of course, you and I are not going to wander through this alone.
We have an incredible guest, Richard Anderson.
He is a professor of clinical reproductive science at the University of Edinburgh, and his research interests include male and female fertility, hormonal male contraception, fertility preservation, and reproductive endocrinology.
Well, he sounds like the perfect person.
Let's get him on the line.
Richard, it is lovely to have you on What's Up Docs.
Welcome.
Thank you.
Lovely to meet you both.
We're talking about male contraception today.
Can you tell us what exactly we mean when we say contraception?
And it's worth underlining that contraception is not the same as preventing sexually transmitted infections, which we're not talking about today.
And there are all these different types, but there's been this notable deficit for men in terms of an oral contraceptive.
Before we get into that, can you explain a bit about the difference between male fertility and female fertility?
Of course, we will be doing an episode on fertility for couples in general and an episode on female contraceptives particularly.
Richard, can you run us through the options for male contraceptives that we currently have?
