So the proxy.
As I was looking for a proxy for Brian, I thought about something he told me.
How on the surface, the problem was that he couldn't stop correcting his mother-in-law.
But deeper down, it was probably his way of responding to the disease and the pain and terror it was inflicting.
Brian said he probably needed to just learn how to accept the situation.
He didn't know.
So the proxy team started poking around the research on acceptance.
And we discovered something that seemed almost too on the nose.
Something called acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT.
A type of cognitive behavioral therapy.
I reached out to Stephen C. Hayes, the person who created ACT.
And he was like, sure, I could talk.
But you know who would even be better?
I know someone who uses this therapy specifically with caregivers of people with neurocognitive disorders.
People just like Brian.
This is how I found Claudia.
