I was trying to find my way as a teenager.
And I had a lot of one-on-one time with him, which is kind of unique given the number of kids that were there.
I learnt a lot from him via osmosis more than anything.
I don't think we spoke about, you know, things in very straightforward ways.
I would just watch him interact with the world.
And now that he's not around anymore, I really think about those interactions.
I think about how he was...
how he held himself, how he spoke.
You know, I got to watch him go to conferences across the country and get up and speak and I think I really learnt a lot of my craft in those moments as well.
What kind of work did he do?
He was a general practitioner.
He was a GP in King's Cross during the heroin boom.
He started safe injecting rooms.
He pushed for methadone clinics and ran a number of those.
He was a community doctor in the most beautiful sense.
And did he try and shield you from his work or did he show you his work?
Oh, he showed me.
He employed me even with a milkshake on a Saturday and I went to –
the clinic and because it was Potts Point at that time late 90s early 2000s you know there were incredibly diverse groups coming in and so we'd have homeless men and you know sex workers and then we'd have a number of Hollywood stars as well and so when I would go on Saturday mornings you know I grew up in a really privileged environment I got to go to a private school
And then on Saturdays I would go and I would sit at reception as a 14-year-old and I would witness him come out and speak with addicts and connect with them and take them for walks.
