If you had been standing next to Edison when he invented the light bulb, you would have just gone, oh, this is electricity.
And he would have said, well, this is a light bulb, which is powered by electricity, but electricity is going to power a lot more things.
It just was the first exposure that anyone had to electricity.
And if you had been standing there, presumably you would have been like, how am I going to use a light bulb?
Lots of ways, but also the city is going to build electrical infrastructure.
You don't need to carry a light bulb around with you everywhere.
It's just going to be ambient lighting too much, frankly.
And I realized that I have to reframe so many conversations around AI because people are obsessed with the idea of AI as an app, when in fact, AI is infrastructure.
AI is the future of cognition.
And so much of our thinking is myopic because we are talking about a thing that we can touch and feel, but in fact, it is much more ambient, much more universal than this and has far greater consequences, both good and bad than we are currently realizing.
When I started writing the book, I did so because I had this personal experience that really helped me understand this.
In October 2024, October 1st, the longshoremen of the United States went on strike, the dock workers.
They walked off the eastern seaboard.
45,000 men and women walked off the eastern seaboard and shut down our economy.
And the head of the longshoremen union, Harold Daggett, went on CNN on the morning of October 2nd
And did this long hour and a half long interview where he basically pointed, he opened the interview by pointing at the camera and saying to the audience, you have no idea how dangerous I am.
I will cripple you.
And I remember so well that interview, he went on to say that he did not want more money and he didn't want safer working conditions.
What he wanted was a guarantee from the ports that they wouldn't automate the long Sherman jobs.
And I sent him this very long, very thoughtful email and he sent me something very different back and he didn't want to meet with me.
