The first, do you believe you could be gainfully employed outside the union?
80% said agree or strongly agree.
Two, was anyone in your family in the union?
85% had a father, brother, uncle, cousin, or grandfather in the union.
We only spoke to men.
Third question, do you want anyone in your family to join the union?
89% said yes, and two said they were going to continue having children until they had sons so that their sons could join the union.
And the last question, what is the most important part of your job?
Multiple choice question, the mode.
The most common answer was community.
And then I asked him a question that I couldn't figure out because their picket signs read robots don't pay taxes and automation harms families.
So I asked each of them, I said, if automation harms families, who does automation benefit?
And strictly I said, in this case, who benefits economically if we automate the ports?
And some of them did not like the tone of my voice or the nature of the question, but some of them were willing to answer it.
I think all of them actually were willing to agree that the answer is everyone.
Hmm.
including eventually the longshoremen and their kids.
And the only reason I am confident in this is that you and me and everyone around us are descendants of people whose jobs were automated to our collective economic benefit.
