people that may go on to win gold medals yeah no it's exciting bunch uh it's the you can call me bunch did you bunch yeah some some real talent in in in the team obviously um you know the quality is good at the commonwealth games you know some of the countries stand out as well and obviously it can be door dependent at times at the commonwealth service in in the past but um yeah loads of optimism going in and obviously um england will have a strong team going in as well i
I've had a look at some of the names and I know all of the names, but four or five of them I know better than others. They're seasoned. Lauren Mackey, I know Ellie's cleaner. She's tried to get to the Olympics. Sasha Hickey's got that history. Chantal Reid did go to the Olympics. The men, Ellis Trowbridge, I mean, you've been sending him around. Patrice Mugazi, he's been going around. Isaac Oko, Damar Thomas. We're going to hear from Damar, and then we're going to also hear from Ruby White a bit later on. So it's a mixed team, Rob, isn't it?
Yeah, and, you know, you talk Isaac Oko, he's just done really well at the World Boxing Cup in China, reached the final, beat the Olympic silver medalist in the semifinal. So there's just one example of boxers progressing and doing really well on the bigger stage at the moment.
The Commonwealth, I mean, the last Commonwealth in Birmingham, a couple of golds, but a lot of good British, a lot of good English fighters, and a lot of your GB boxers were in there. Not necessarily worked their way out for the Olympics, but that's often what the Commonwealth can be used for, a gauge for the Olympics two years later.
Yeah, and Lewis Richardson was at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Bronze medal. Yeah, and a couple of years later, you know, he wins the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.
Got a brilliant bronze medal. You know what I mean by that?
He's winning the bronze medal. That was a brilliant bronze medal. Absolutely brilliant. And yeah, it just shows you that, you know, a multi-sport event, the Commonwealth Games and that environment and, you know... getting a medal and then pushing on and challenging yourself. And that's what Lewis did on the back of the Commonwealth Games, really, and the Olympic qualifier for Tokyo. So, yeah, some really good stories coming through. And like I say, it's a team with plenty of talent in it that's representing England in Glasgow. So it should be really exciting times.
And when the squad was announced, how many of those people could have been swapped out for an alternative? Do you know what I mean by that?
I think the home nations have really pushed on and there's some really good talent coming through the pathway. And I think that, you know, a lot of the weights for male and female were closely contested, in some cases between GB boxers, in some cases between a GB and an England boxer. Yeah. but yeah there's some good talent highly competitive on the selection really fair panel and it was talked through and you know lots of the weights were talked through and there was challenges on both sides but yeah I think my view was that the right team was selected and it's an exciting team
