What is cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) and why is it considered a simple therapy for anxiety?
Hello listeners and welcome back to another episode of ADHD Autism and Anxiety Breaking Out of the Box. I'm your host, Dr. Noreen Russell. I'm thrilled you've tuned into this episode and I am really excited to learn from today's guest. So let me introduce her to you and then we'll get started with some conversation. Lots and lots to talk about and lots and lots for me and hopefully all of you to learn about. So today's guest is Tana Young and she is a psychiatric nurse practitioner, nervous system specialist, and founder of Neurovana Calm, where she helps reshape how people approach anxiety, insomnia, and mental health treatment planning. Her work focuses on one powerful idea. Many people struggling with anxiety aren't broken.
Their nervous systems are overwhelmed. Through a combination of clinical expertise, neuroscience education, and evidence back tools like cranial electrotherapy stimulation or CES. Tana helps audiences better understand what real nervous system regulation looks like and why modern treatment plans need to move beyond one size fits all solutions. Known for translating complex mental health concepts into calm, relatable conversations, Tana brings a grounded, patient centered perspective to the future of mental health care. Welcome, Tana. Thank you. Happy to be here, Doctor Russell. Thanks for that great introduction. I'm so excited that you're here because when I looked at your profile I thought I like what she's saying.
I don't know where the overlap is between our work, but I love what she's saying. what resonated for me was this idea of the nervous system being dysregulated, which of course in ADHD and autism as well as anxiety can happen. And then when I read your one size doesn't fit all. I was hooked. I knew we needed to have a conversation.
Yeah, and you know, even just talking before we started recording, like I was already enjoying our conversation. I'm excited for the conversation too. I know it's gonna be Uh i we will enjoy it, I think, 'cause I know that I I will. Yeah, and I'm I'm pleased to be here. Thank you.
I'm so delighted you're here. So let's start with just the basics. What do you do? What what is revolutionary about what you've created? Tell us, you know, some of my audience is very familiar with mental health treatment, some less so, some have kids who are very complex, who've been through all kinds of mental health treatment, some less so, but Explain it to us like we're in the sixth grade.
Okay. Well, you know, I would love to be able to take credit for CES. There's nothing revolutionary about it. It's actually had FDA clearance since nineteen seventy nine. It's not new. It's just been underutilized, been unknown, in a way it it it doesn't make sense because it's so incredibly effective. And a lot of what drives me, Dr. Russell, is that like I wish that I had known about this sooner. I wish that I had known about it when my kids were little 'cause it could have helped with so many of the problems that we were having, with my daughter being anxious every night and the the stress that that caused for not only you know her and me but um You know, the you know so I practice psychiatry. You know, that's what that I'm a full time practicing
uh mental health clinician, you know. I I see peop I see twenty, twenty, thirty patients every day. And I'm having a great time. I love doing it. And you know, to s to find out almost six years uh it's been almost seven years now, like it's Алак файв анагаф єрс ін, а лен дар бе тул. out there that whole time that Could have been like such a great addition to the things that that I had been doing with patients. That і just did not make sense to me, да і вознморно. And that is why I founded Nervana was to bring this into like into an awareness and also make it more accessible. So like I said, this is not new, this is not uh theoretical, it's not um experimental. It works.
just it hasn't been well known. So the only thing that maybe that I've done that's new is made it more accessible.
