Az elmúlt évszázadok során finom változásokon esett át.Az emelkedő hangsorból kimarad, illetve az ereszkedő hangsorban is ritkán hallható a Pa. A karakterisztikára jellemző főhangok miatt a tampura rendszerint M S S S' hangolásban szól (az általánosan használt P S S S' helyett).
