Development & Implementation of a Multidisciplinary Preop Nutrition Optimization Clinic

The JPEN article discussed in this podcast highlights the POET program developed and implemented at Duke University to address the issue of preoperative malnutrition and its negative consequences. The paper’s author discusses the preliminary experience to efficiently screen patients for preoperative nutrition risk and proactively manage malnutrition before and after surgery. The POET team believes that programs such as this will improve nutrition screening, nutrition care and outcomes, along with significant cost savings due to the negative and costly effects of malnutrition.
