What is thematic investing and how can ETFs be used for it?

Owen Rask 0:00
Property investors often talk about using debt to build wealth. In the share market, that's called gearing. With the BetaShares WealthBuilder range, investors can access moderate gearing into shares, and with the newly launched GG-BL, That means exposure to a diversified portfolio of around 1,300 global companies excluding Australia, all with no loan applications, credit checks, or margin calls. Gearing magnifies both gains and losses, so it's only suitable for investors with a very high tolerance for risk. You can learn more about the WealthBuilder range of ETFs at the BetaShares website. And don't forget to read the PDS and TMD to decide if it's right for you. BetaShares Capital Limited is the issuer.

Yeah, we've got a very special guest with us today. We've got Kanish from ETF Securities. But before we get to that, we should mention that one of the most popular topics that we have on the show is ETFs and ETF investing. And we've covered ETF 101, We've covered a beginner's guide to ETFs, if you like. This time around, we're going to take it to the next step. We're going to talk about something a bit more exciting, a bit more actionable, which is using ETFs to get exposure to something that you're really excited about, whether that's an industry or we'll talk about sectors and thematics and the differences between those.

How have ETFs evolved to target specific themes in investing?

Owen Rask 2:45
But Kanish, I thought maybe we could just throw it over to you, mate. Just introduce a bit about yourself and your role at ETF Securities.
Kanish Chugh 2:53
No, thank you, Alan. So, yeah, so my name's obviously Kinesh Chirga. I'm head of distribution for ETF Securities. Now, I guess I've been part of the asset management industry, give or take nearly a decade now, but, you know, really part of the ETF Securities business for five years. And essentially my role is to look after the sales and marketing, so distribution as we call it, looking at, you know, retail, institutional and the advised area and really covering our ETFs, which A lot of people don't know, and I know it was probably covered in a previous podcast, but we're the second oldest in Australia. So we've been around since 2003. But we're most well known for our gold ETF, physical gold, so G-O-L-D.
Kanish Chugh 3:36
And more recently in the past five years, we've tried to sort of broaden out into different asset classes, looking at equities, international, domestic, thematics and sectors, which obviously today we're talking about the thematic area.
Owen Rask 3:49
Awesome. It's very exciting. I know Kate uses ETFs as well as managed funds. So yeah, it's going to be some good actionable takeaways from this, Kate.
Kate Campbell 4:01
Yeah, awesome. Well, I was really excited that we were going to be talking about thematic investing and using ETFs in that way because once you've learned the basics, sometimes you can want to mix it up a little bit.
