What is the main question about stock picking raised at the start of the episode?

Scott Phillips 0:00
Some ETFs are rubbish. Don't jump in every ETF just 'cause it exists. And don't follow the trend just 'cause the trend exists. I had a bloke come to the house fixing the internet and up on the wall I had a framed copy of the Van Garden Dex chart and he looked at that and he said, What's that? And I gave the 30-second example. He said, can I do that? I said, yeah. He said, how do I do that? To your point, simple, not easy. Helping people go from, okay, I know I probably should, to I can with confidence. Man is many things, but he is not rational. So for as long as humans set the parameters, even if the machines are supposed to give you the right answer, you'll ask for the answer you want and you'll respond emotionally out of fear, out of greed, out of all those things that we know.

doing? I went very well, mate. Thanks for having me.
Owen Rask 1:49
Thanks for making the commute. Just uh just a lazy seven and a half hours with Chat GPT to keep me company.
Scott Phillips 1:55
Mate, and I was very, very well kept company too. The AI revolution, I'm sure we'll talk about it, is phenomenal.
Owen Rask 2:01
It is indeed. Now you are here in Melbourne, which you have spent a bit of your life living in Melbourne, but uh you're no longer from the the the far south, I'll say. But uh today we're gonna talk about, amongst other things, investing, business, your journey, um a bit about the multiful and of course a bit about your book, the one page investing plan.
Matt Chandler 2:18
Thank you.
Owen Rask 2:18
I wanted to start with a pretty Maybe it's not good podcasting, but I wanted to ask you a question. In uh various interviews and over the years, I've heard you say that investing is cumulative. Yes. And I wanted to ask you what you meant by that.
Scott Phillips 2:34
So there are very few things in life you get better at as you get older. Now you and I once had more hair than we do now. And I'm older than you, so you have my eternal damnation for that. Um What is wonderful about investing is if you Are thoughtful about it and if you actually pay attention, so you know, it can you can drift your life away. But if you're doing that, the lessons that you learn do tend to help you become a better investor over time. The mistakes you make, the successes you have, the analysis you do, the research you do, the feedback you get. If you are a little bit and not you don't have to be completely nerdy about it, but if you're a little bit thoughtful about it, you can take those lessons, those opportunities, and just build on top of those.
Scott Phillips 3:11
And so you do end up with this situation where the thing too is it's a bit muscle memory, a bit kind of mental frameworks. He's a Charlie Munger, isn't it? Um that lattice work you can create, you can start hanging things off. And so it's either I've seen that movie before or I've seen how this can now it doesn't mean things can't be different in the future than the past. So it's not about saying I saw this exact thing happen. But if you could learn the moving parts, the underlying pieces of what's going on.
