Almost half of the world's population cannot sleep 8 hours a day. Sleep continues to be one of the great biological mysteries, and it is the epidemic of modern society that no one talks about. This book, Why Do We Sleep?, seeks to explain the science of sleep, the physical damage of lack of sleep, and what we can do to improve it. We start with another episode of Bibliotequeando. As always, I am your host, Ricardo Lugo, at Bibliotequeando on the networks. Keep sharing the account, giving likes, following, promoting the podcast 5 stars to continue improving our knowledge and culture through books. You can also subscribe to the Bibliotequeando blog, where I write different articles about different topics of the books that we do in the podcast and others that are not part of this list.

Those who follow me know that I couldn't bring an episode of this podcast last week because I got COVID, I had a cough attack, I had a fever. Ironically, I just read this book and I couldn't sleep well, which caused me a little more psychological damage than I expected, since I learned with this book all the damage of lack of sleep. And that's one of the main messages, but the neuroscientist, the author of this book, Matthew Walker, He actually says that there is an apathy of society towards sleep. He thinks that sleep is an epidemic and that it is one of the great problems of public health in the 21st century, but no one talks about this, partly because science, which is what he is representing in this book, has done a very bad job of explaining why we need sleep, and therefore many, let's say, organisms of society
have been formed ignoring the dream, working many working hours that he considers to start very early, double work, extra work, schools, there are many things that he thinks are not respecting the dream and not understanding historically the damage of losing sleep we have ignored this phenomenon. So this book seemed very interesting to me because you know that science draws my attention But the book deals, unlike many other books that talk about biological effects, psychological effects, it does bring many recommendations and it brings many things that perhaps the ordinary person, that you and I, do not know about sleep. The dream perhaps one sees it as simply resting and waking up refreshed the next day and in reality there are many more things happening behind this.
So let's start with the summary of Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker.
