News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Monica Ricks. The U.S. search continues for a missing crew member from an F-15E fighter jet shot down by Iran Friday as Tehran continues its attacks on Gulf Arab states and Israel.
President Trump says the loss won't alter negotiations to end the war, but Axios political reporter Mark Caputo tells Bloomberg it really depends on a number of factors.
We have no evidence as to what's going to happen if the pilot is killed or the crew member, I should say, if the crew member is held hostage or if the crew member is rescued. Three very different scenarios that can affect very differently how Iran deals with the United States and therefore how the United States deals with Iran.
Axios reporter Mark Caputo on Bloomberg this weekend. As for how this airman could be doing, former Assistant Secretary of State for Political and Military Affairs Brigadier General Mark Kimmett tells us they get plenty of training for this exact scenario.
Don't try to be brave. Try to hide. Try to find the right time to contact your rescue team. But first and foremost, get yourself in a place where you can't be found and don't don't attract anything other than those aircraft that are coming to save you.
Iran has offered a bounty for that crew member. The other pilot was safely rescued. A second U.S. combat plane also crashed in the Persian Gulf the same day. It marks a significant blow for Washington as the war enters its sixth week. Meantime, French President Emmanuel Macron is now calling on medium-sized powers to join forces and stand up to the U.S. and China.

That's the lowest since the end of 2022. Deutsche Bank says transatlantic fares 21 days out are already about 200 bucks higher than before the war began. And while airlines say they're seeing customers rush to lock in fares before energy prices drive them up even more, United says its prices could rise another 20 percent if jet fuel stays expensive. President Trump has asked Congress to enact a $2.2 trillion budget for discretionary programs that includes $1.5 trillion for defense. That's a big increase over the $1 trillion he sought for fiscal year 2026. The president has ordered for Homeland Security workers to get paid as the longest government shutdown in history drags on. Here's Bloomberg's Ed Kalecki.
President Trump Friday issued a memo ordering that the remaining Department of Homeland Security employees be paid during a record-long partial government shutdown impacting the agency. Trump's move comes with lawmakers deadlocked on how to end the shutdown.
Chapter 3: How is the situation in Iran affecting US negotiations?
Democrats are seeking changes to Trump's immigration enforcement policies, but congressional Republicans and the White House have balked at those demands. The president's directive, which he announced earlier this week that he intended to sign, led House Republicans to abandon talk of cutting short a two-week Easter recess to try to end the impasse. Ed Kalegi, Bloomberg Radio.
The president's also signed an executive order targeting college sports. It limits the ability for students to transfer schools and oversee collectives that raise money off their name, image, and likeness rights. The order also calls for a governing body to update these rules, evaluate schools, and protect women's and Olympic sports. It's likely to face legal challenges.
Meantime, the NCAA men's Final Four take the court tonight for a spot in the national title game. The women's matchup is already set for tomorrow night after South Carolina beat UConn last night and UCLA top Texas.
