Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Hello, I'm Stephen Carroll. I'm in Brussels, where many of Europe's biggest decisions get made. And I'm Caroline Hepke in London. We're the hosts of the Bloomberg Daybreak Europe podcast. We're up early every weekday, keeping an eye on what's happening across Europe and around the world.
We do it early so the news is fresh, not recycled, and so you know what actually matters as the day gets going. From Brussels, I'm following the politics, policy and the people shaping the European Union right now. And from London, I'm looking at what all that means for markets, money and the wider economy. We've got reporters across Europe and around the globe feeding in as stories break.
So whether it's geopolitics, energy, tech or markets, you're hearing it while it happens. It's smart, calm and to the point. And it fits into your morning. You can find new episodes of the Bloomberg Daybreak Europe podcast by 7am in Dublin or 8am in Brussels, Berlin and Paris on Apple, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.
News when you want it. With Bloomberg News Now, I'm Doug Krisner. Three American service members have been killed in action during operations against the Islamic Republic. The U.S. Central Command did not say where they were killed or under what circumstances. Five others were seriously wounded. And at the same time, President Trump said the U.S. sank nine Iranian naval vessels.
In a post earlier on Truth Social, Trump also said Iran's naval headquarters was destroyed in a separate attack. Now, these developments came during the second day of bombings across Iran. On Saturday, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and other senior leaders were killed. This was a watershed moment in the 47-year existence of the Islamic Republic.
Today, President Trump addressed the moment.
Combat operations continue at this time in full force, and they will continue until all of our objectives are achieved.
Now, these actions have drawn criticism from members of Congress, and Democrats are now expected to force a vote this week on war powers. Here is California Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna speaking to NBC's Meet the Press.
It depends if we can keep several Democrats in line, Josh Gottheimer, Congressman Markowitz, folks who have been on the fence. But I believe that this is a disastrous vote for any Democrat to vote for Donald Trump's war in the Middle East. So I hope we will hold the line. And then, like I said, there are a few Republicans

Chapter 2: What recent events have occurred in U.S.-Iran relations?
The UAE also closed its embassy in Tehran and withdrew its ambassador and all members of its diplomatic mission after attacks by Iranian missiles. We go to Texas next, where a gunman opened fire outside a bar in Austin. Authorities say the suspect drove past the bar, shot a pistol from the window of his SUV, then got out with a rifle and began shooting before being killed by officers.
The shooter killed two and wounded 14. And now we are being told federal authorities are investigating whether this shooting was a reaction to the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. Here is Alex Doran of the FBI.
Looking at as a potential matter of terrorism, obviously the Joint Terrorism Task Force is engaged, which obviously includes members from Austin Police Department as well as several federal and state and local partners.
That is Alex Doran from the FBI. February was a losing month for the U.S. equity market, and now Wall Street will focus on jobs data and earnings in the week ahead. We have a preview from Bloomberg's Charlie Pellett. We'll be hearing from Target, Gap, and Best Buy, and all three are expected to reveal slowing profit growth and tighter margins.
Moda Mahajan is head of investment strategy at Edward Jones.
Perhaps the silver lining here is as we look underneath the surface at the fundamentals, the U.S. economy is still growing at over 2%, we think, in 2025. And by the way, we do think earnings growth, S&P broadly, corporate earnings are up about 14% potentially in 2026 as well.
Other retailers reporting this week include Ross Stores and BJ's Wholesale Club. In New York, Charlie Pellett, Bloomberg Radio. And that is news when you want it. With Bloomberg News Now, I'm Doug Krisner, and this is Bloomberg.
This is Special Agent Regal, Special Agent Bradley Hall. The time is approximately... 11.15 a.m. About to start consensual telephone call with Dr. Daiwa Zhang. China's Ministry of State Security is one of the most mysterious and powerful spy agencies in the world. But in 2017, the FBI got inside.
I'd never seen that much evidence in my entire career, and I don't think we'll ever see that much evidence again. I now have several terabytes of an MSS officer, no doubt, no question, of his life.
