Hey, happy trade deadline day. This is Jay's Top Plus. Blake Murphy with you for the next four hours, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It's going to be a fun one and fireworks already a little before we come on. You surely heard last night or you saw it this morning that the Blue Jays have traded Kevin Gossman to the Chicago Cubs for a pair of prospects. Well, this morning, the Blue Jays turned around and did some of their 2027 and 2028 shopping early trading top prospect Arjun Amala as well as Eddie Micheletti Jr. and Angel Rivero. To the Angels for Jose Soriano. Soriano, a 27-year-old righty with two more years of control via arbitration beyond this one. He comes in rocking a .329 ERA, third full season as a starter.
He has two Tommy Johns in his history, so not as much experience as you might expect. for a 27-year-old, a guy who looked absolutely nasty against the Blue Jays a couple times earlier this year, has seen his stuff dip a little bit this year, especially as the year's gone on, has occasionally been a little walk-prone or blow-up-prone or things like that, but a close-to-front-end starter. Again, the 329 ERA, over the first couple months of the season, he was among the league's ERA leaders. Great strikeout rate. His, like... Generally speaking, he is one of the best ground ball artists in the league. That's down a little bit this year, but still a very good ground ball, right? So lots to work with there.
The Phillies also just added Luis Arias, according to a number of reports out there. So that'll be fun around baseball. Tarek Skubal is a Dodger as well. The White Sox added, the Rays added. We'll talk to Eric Langenhagen of Fangraphs to get the sense of the prospects the Jays got back in the Kevin Gosman deal, as well as the prospects the Blue Jays gave up in the Jose Soriano deal. Again, that's Arjun Namala, Eddie Micheletti Jr., and on hell rivero who is a complex level player obviously arjun amala the headline item there outside of the dodgers traded for school he might end up being the top prospect traded at this deadline and you know debatably the jays top prospect safely top three jays prospect along with jojo parker and then depending on who you ask whether it's don't Perry or Jake Bloss is still high on the fan graphs list actually. But yeah, probably a top two prospect in the Blue Jays system.
And that's a little not unexpected. I did a Blue Jays central hit yesterday on how the Blue Jays playoff odds and the way the team has played this year do not suggest that Buying was a prudent move, but buying with an eye toward 2027 and 2028, we call this pre-agency, is what it's started to become known as in basketball, where no one's a free agent anymore.
