Hey, what's going on? Welcome to Jay's Top Plus. One week out from the Major League Baseball trade deadline. That goes down August 3rd at 6 p.m. That is the holiday Monday. We will be on for four hours that day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. And after this weekend, the writing was mostly on the wall beforehand. But the Jays dropped two of three to the Red Sox. And it is pretty clear that this is going to be early. Should be largely a seller's week. Obviously, always room within that to do. Roster balancing or challenge trades or strength for strength trades, those kind of things. We saw one of those on the weekend from the Red Sox and the Nationals as Curtis Meade got dealt for Connelly early. But the headline items are almost certainly going to be the Blue Jays
As sellers, because dropping two of three to the Red Sox leaves them once again at 10 games under .500, still dead last in the American League East, five and a half out of a wild card spot, and with playoff odds that have gotten down to just six and a half percent. Lots to get to today. We will talk to Shai Davidi a little later in the show. Blue Jays amateur scouting director Mark Shmuda is talking to media during this show, actually, so we won't have that, but we'll talk to Shai coming out of that. How will the Blue Jays' weekend loss to the Red Sox shape their trade-deadline strategy?
to start tonight. Maybe those guys are feeling similarly. If that was the last one for Gossman, he gave up three over six. Six strikeouts and a walk. Pretty standard quality start kind of stuff. Nothing spectacular. That's kind of been the story of his season so far. And then the bullpen didn't give him any help keeping things close. On Saturday, Dylan Cease was excellent with a complete game shutout that is statistically one of the greatest Blue Jays starts of all time, which rocks. Friday was a little closer. The Blue Jays actually managed to come back after Trey Savage had a rough start. Well, rough, high strikeout, but inefficient outing. Only lasted four innings. Gave up three there. And then CJ Van Eyck was used in leverage.
Brandon Little had been used in leverage on Sunday. Those are troubling spots to have to use CJ Van Eyck and Brandon Little. Have to use being in quotation marks here. But you see the cost of being a bad team for a long time. Part of why the bullpen wasn't super available on Friday night is that Because you hadn't been winning. You hadn't used your leverage guys a lot. And they all got make work stuff in on Thursday. And then it kind of goes on you or they all got make work stuff in on Wednesday and then needed were actually needed on Thursday. And then so, you know, Rogers is down. Varland is only available in a safe situation. So you go to CJ, you go to CJ Van Eyck and that plays out the way it does.
And then on Sunday, Brandon Little, who, you know, if he's on the roster, you got to use him somewhere. But I don't think any Blue Jays fan is going to trust Brandon Little anymore. anytime soon. That wasn't the reason they lost. They lost on Sunday because they could only muster one run, but it wasn't as close as it could be. We will talk about all of this. We will talk about the trade deadline. We will talk about some of the guys you may see called up after the Blue Jays sell between now and Monday.
