How is the Blue Jays' recent series and playoff outlook shaping trade‑deadline thinking?
Jays win a game, Jays win a series. Now it's time to win the off day and then win the trade deadline. They're probably not going to win enough to get into the playoffs. So we're going to win all these other things instead. The Jays won 5-2 yesterday, took 2-3 against a Nationals team fighting for a wildcard spot in the National League. Fun game. Still important to play good baseball and have fun games to call and talk about. But big picture, and everything is big picture here, a couple of days before Monday's 6 p.m. trade deadline, Probably not moving the needle much to take two of three against a good, young, but flawed Nationals team. The Jays still sit nine games under .500. They still sit fifth in the American League East.
They still sit five and a half games back of the wild card with six teams to jump, and they still sit at 7.1% playoff odds, according to fan graphs. as of this morning so maybe there are optimists among you who see the seven percent and say that's not zero i didn't hear no bell um you're welcome to do that the people who are still in the clubhouse after monday at 6 p.m are certainly still going to be doing that uh but for the purposes of today's show tomorrow's show and monday's show it is likely we're talking a lot of trade deadline stuff which is uh fun um I would love to sit here and give you 10 trade ideas or 11 trade ideas, but I don't have it like that. So we will kick it around at an MLB level and a Jays level.
We'll talk to Britt Jiroli of The Athletic a little later in the show. We also have Ben Clemens on for the second hour. He of Fangraphs, he just completed his annual trade value series, which is super helpful before the deadline in terms of contextualizing what makes a player valuable, who is more valuable than another player, what can you expect to get back if you traded... player type x player type y and things like that we're also going to talk a little bit about last night's game because it was a or yesterday afternoon's game rather because it was a pretty fun one and there were some uh some important notes to take from that one and we will also take a look at the blue jays trade deadline we will do all of that to start with our pal caitlin mcgrath often on jay's talk she joins us now caitlin how we doing

Yeah, I mean, you'll take it. I mean, it feels like it's been a while since the Blue Jays have won a series and just feel good coming out of a series. Happy flight and all those things that John Schneider was kind of talking about. And so, yeah, I mean, just to keep the sort of energy and morale up around the team, it's nice to have these wins. And as you say, the Nationals, they're They're a good team in the sense that they are closer to the playoffs than the Blue Jays are, but they're flawed and they're young and they're probably sort of not at their peak yet. So, it's a team that you should be able to beat if you're playing your best. So, they were able to do that and there's a lot of positives from the Blue Jays' perspective.
Savage has a good start. You get some lucky bounces for the offense and then also Louis Varlin has a six-out save. So, that was impressive as well. So, Lots of things to like, as you say, a little bit too late most likely, but baseball, it's a long season. You still got to have some wins in there.
As far as Yassavage goes, he's had a pretty up-and-down year. We've seen him lose command entirely. We've seen him strike a ton of guys out but run out of pitches to go deep in the game. We've seen him do kind of everything in between those. Yesterday, he goes six and two-thirds.
